Opposite is a word that means ‘on the other side of something.’

  • Your hotel is on Main Street, opposite the bank.
  • We live at opposite ends of the village.

Opposite can also mean ‘in front of you and looking at you.’

  • He sat opposite me at the table.

We can use opposite to talk about two things that are completely different.

  • Big is the opposite of small.

Common uses

If we want to tell someone that we are very different from¬†them in some way, we can say that we are the opposite. For example: “I hate sports.” “Oh, I’m the opposite. I love sports!”
