If you hide something, it means that you put it somewhere because you don’t want people to see it or find it.
- She hides her money in a box under her bed.
If you hide, it means that you go somewhere because you don’t want people to see you.
- When he saw his boss, he hid behind a tree.
If you hide something, it can also mean that you don’t want other people to know about it.
- They tried to hide their surprise. (=They were surprised, but they didn't want anyone to know that.)
Did you know?
Hide and Seek is a children’s game. In the game, some people hide, and the others look for (or ‘seek’) their friends. They have to count before they can look, and when they’re finished counting, they say, “Ready or not, here I come!”
In pop culture
Do you know the song “Ready or Not” by The Fugees? It uses the same words as the children’s game Hide and Seek. Listen for these words in the song: “Ready or not / Here I come / You can’t hide / Gonna (=I’m going to) find you / And make you want me.”
