Abroad means ‘in a foreign country.’
- Amanda spent her gap year traveling abroad.
- The manager is in charge of all operations when the president is abroad.
- Many students study abroad so they can learn a new language.
- The movie star is well known at home and abroad.
Don't confuse it with
aboard: on a ship, train or airplane. Example: “We were aboard a ship for an ocean voyage.”
