I belong to the local book club.

If something belongs to you, it means that it is yours.

  • Does this jacket belong to you?

If you belong to a group, it means that you are a member of that group.

  • I belong to the local book club.

If something belongs somewhere, it means that it should be in that place.

  • This is a history book. It doesn’t belong in the horror section.

If you belong somewhere, it means that you are part of a group or society. You don’t feel different from the other people there.

  • The people are nice here, but I don’t feel like I belong.

In pop culture

Do you know the song “Ho Hey” by The Lumineers? It’s about a boy who wants a girl to be his girlfriend. He thinks that she belongs with him (=that she should be with him). Listen for these words in the song: “I belong with you / You belong with me / You’re my sweetheart.”
