Almost means ‘very nearly.’

  • The golfer almost got a hole in one.
  • After the 50 percent discount, Michelle paid almost nothing for the dress.
  • Judah is almost 3 years old.

Common uses

Almost there means ‘nearly arriving at a location.’ Example: “After driving for hours, Andrea told her children, ‘We’re almost there.'” But almost there can also mean ‘nearly reaching a life goal.’ Sing along with this Disney song “Almost There.”

In pop culture

Watch the trailer for the movie Almost Famous, set in 1973, about a teenager writing an article for Rolling Stone Magazine about Stillwater, a rock and roll band that opens for more famous bands. Stillwater is almost famous.
