Opposite is a word that means ‘on the other side of something.’

  • Your hotel is on Main Street, opposite the bank.
  • We live at opposite ends of the village.

Opposite can also mean ‘in front of you and looking at you.’

We can use opposite to talk about two things that are completely different.

  • Big is the opposite of small.

Common uses

If we want to tell someone that we are very different from them in some way, we can say that we are the opposite. For example: “I hate sports.” “Oh, I’m the opposite. I love sports!”
