"Look at that!"
We use that to talk about something when it isn’t very close to us.
- What’s that?
- That woman over there is my neighbor.
We can use that after some words—for example think, say and know. We don’t have to use that after these words so sometimes we don’t say it.
- I think that she’s a nice person. (or I think she’s a nice person.)
We can also use that to mean ‘very’ or ‘so.’
- Riding a bicycle is not that difficult when you know how to do it.
Common uses
When something is finished, or there isn’t any more of it, we sometimes say, “That’s it.” For example, “It’s 5pm so that’s it for today. See you tomorrow.”

Crocodile Dundee is a movie about an Australian man who can fight crocodiles. In this video from the movie, Mick Dundee is in New York. A man with a knife asks for his wallet, but Dundee isn’t scared. He says, “That’s not a knife,” and he takes out a bigger knife! What happens next?
